Like many people, my first at home yoga practice was borne of circumstance. Well, my very first was because Mom was practicing along with the leotard lady on T.V., but then when I had moved out on my own and wanted that feeling of connection and aliveness, my instinct took me to the library where I checked out an old book with long descriptions and line drawings. It was awkward at first. Okay, all along. Engaging those awkward moments of reading, trying, feeling, checking back with the book and adjusting and feeling engendered confidence and created an inner sense of connection. Not everyone wants to or should learn from a book - every getting started method has it's own drawbacks. But that sense of experimentation is what I'm looking for in every yoga practice, every day, whether it's my personal practice or my teaching practice. Practicing on your own is a unique way to learn listening, because what you're listening to isn't heard with your ears. It's a feeling in your skin, bone and sinew, a pull toward expression. When was the last time you rolled out your mat, stood at the top and started paying attention to your body from the ground up? Forget the mat - how about now?
